Personal status law- Heading to new horizons – Inclusion and respect
Federal law No. 28 of 2005 which governs the personal affairs such as marriage, Divorce, custody, and inheritance in the country, Emirate of Abu Dhabi have introduced first secular courts in the region for enabling the non-Muslim community to resort the remedies in most easy and accessible ways in par with the best international best practices. Abu Dhabi law no. 14 of 2021 concerning the status for non-Muslim foreigners. This new law consists of 20 articles which covers the areas of civil marriage, divorce, joint custody, and inheritance. The new law also provides the provision for no-fault divorce and disposal of the case on the first hearing without the provision for family counseling and the proceeding with be conducted in bilingual courts. Fourth and fifth chapter of the law respectively deals with the non-Muslim wills and proof of paternity either through marriage or recognition of paternity.
